Recommend some shops in the JAX areas for...
I need to re-do my entire exhaust from the catalytic converter back (after 20 years on the road, are they even necessary anymore?).
I'm also looking for a decent paint and auto body shop that restore my faded little beast.
I'm also polling to see if anyone has ever replaced bushings with the poly ones and how hard of a job is it?
And finally what is a grunt box? I was looking into the pulley kit for the S/C and it was recommended I install a grunt box but I can't find what the heck it is.
Okay I think that's all for now, and if you are getting together this weekend at Sonic's, probably see ya'll then.

I did the front bushings at the auto skills center on mayport, It did not take that long, and I had very little idea what i was doing to be honest.. The hardest part was getting the old bushings out.. Either by press like I did or bring a torch to burn them out..

Did you replace them with the OEM one's or the urethane bushings?

i did bushings too, i didnt notice as much difference because my oem bushings were actually fine, but on an mk1 they are probably badly worn at this point, it will make your suspension tighter and road feel better.

if you want paint and body work i know some people who work for a dealership that might be willing to do a "backyard" job, but even then you are still looking at 1000-1400 for good paint

screw the cat convt. just replace it with a section of pipe. does the rest of the exhaust have rust or holes or something? if so maxi muffler or rainbow muffler can make you up an exhaust pretty cheap, or you can get one of those monza exhausts on ebay. back when i had an 88 i got a replacement at meineke

as for the grunt box, if you get the bigger pulley, you will build more boost at low rpms but the ecu wont be able to put in enough fuel and you will go lean. the grunt box uses the cold start injector (it's an extra fuel injector ususally in the intake manifold to add more fuel on a cold start) to add more fuel in the low rpm range to prevent detonation/knock which will seem like a power gain because the ecu wont be retarding timing from the knock as a result of the lean condition.

Is the grunt box called anything else? I've tried some searches and came up with not much on finding one. Although i found an interesting site on "grunt sculptures" but it has nothing to do with what I'm looking for or this forum; still really funny though.
Hopefully I can get most of these projects done I've been putting off, being as I have the next 5 months home. So as always keep the great info coming and I'll post up a repair party when I'm ready to tackle everything. I have a great bottle of Honduran rum I've been dying to get into and it may make the repairs less painful for all involved. BTW, anyone going to Sonic's tonite?

yeah was lame, just me and rick, mark was out at disney world for his bday and ward was out helping diego and co.

do a search on mr2oc.com for the grunt box for more info, but it is exactly as i already told you, it uses the cold start injector as an extra injector to add more fuel at low rpm because you will be lean there with a larger pulley that builds more psi at low rpm.

you can email the maker of it on mr2oc.com, if you do a search on there, he sells them.

There was one guy in the Gmail.com forums that made them, but the guy hasn't logged in for a while, he was the only one i found through my searches that made them. I have his email ADX, so I'll see if he replies but it was from an MR2OC.COM thread from January.
